Heterogeneous cloud radio access networks
EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking welcomes submissions to the thematic series on 'Heterogeneous cloud radio access networks'
In future generation wireless networks, most of the processing is expected to be centralized in order to deal with the oceanic volume of data as well as interference in hyper-dense heterogeneous networks (HetNets), new paradigms for improving both spectral efficiency and energy efficiency through suppressing inter-tier interference and enhancing the cooperative processing capabilities will be needed. Towards this end, cloud computing technologies can be the game changer in shouldering the processing overhead of the conventional macro base stations (MBSs) in HetNets. Consequently, heterogeneous cloud radio access networks (H-CRANs) may emerge as a cost-effective potential solution to alleviate inter-tier interference and improve cooperative processing gains in HetNets through combination with cloud computing. H-CRANs can vastly enhance the capabilities of MBSs equipped with massive multiple antenna techniques (massive MIMO) and simplify low power nodes by connecting to a signal processing cloud. There is a huge scope of research in resource allocation and physical-layer design and optimization in H-CRANs.
Stimulated by the attractive features and potential benefits of H-CRANs, their development and deployment have recently gained an upsurge of interest in the wireless community. However, in order to bring a paradigm-shift in conventional radio access technologies, H-CRANs come with unique challenges, and there are significant technical issues that need to be addressed for successful rollout and operations of these network technologies.
The goal of this special issue is to present original research articles previously unpublished and not currently under review by another journal that address various challenges and advance the design of H-CRAN technologies.

- Massive MIMO systems and channel modelling in HetNets
- Advanced beamforming techniques in massive MIMO HetNets
- Massive MIMO antenna deployment strategies in HetNets
- Antenna and propagation aspects of mmWave communications in HetNets
- Cloud radio access network (C-RAN) technologies
- Self-organization network (SON) algorithm utilization in HetNets
- Inter- and intra-cell interference management, including interference alignment, technologies for HetNets
- Full-duplex antenna design and calibration schemes for HetNets
- Self-interference management technologies for full-duplex HetNets
- Performance evaluation of H-CRAN systems and technologies
- Resource Sharing and optimization in H-CRANS
- System architectures of C-RANs/H-CRANs/F-RANs for 5G
- Backhaul/fronthaul access technologies for C-RANs/H-CRANs/F-RANs
- Stochastic geometric approaches in C-RANs/H-CRANs/F-RANs
- Game theoretic approaches in C-RANs/H-CRANs/F-RANs
- Channel estimation and training design in C-RANs/H-CRANs/F-RANs
